Oral history is widely perceived as a means of democratizing history, revealing the myriad truths of people’s lived experiences and complicating the grand historical narratives that would otherwise silence them. Yet, when applied to projects aimed at understanding lived experiences of conflicts and their aftermath, this approach poses a range of ethical and methodological challenges.
