Janine is currently pursuing an MSc in Geography at Concordia University. As a new transplant to Montreal belonging to the Filipino-Canadian diaspora, she is interested in learning about how Filipina migrants create a sense of home and belonging through material culture (objects), memorymaking, visual/oral histories, and preserving cultural archives. Grounded in postcolonial feminist perspectives, her research and curatorial work seek to create discourse on active placemaking and identity formation for culturally underrepresented narratives. Janine is currently interested in the curation of photography, physical artifacts, and oral histories to explore how these mediums become sites of cultural expression to subvert colonial legacies of representation and the hypervisibility/invisibility paradox through community and art-based methodologies.
