The COHDS community is rooted in principles of collaboration, reciprocity and ethics. It is a space where community members and researchers come together to create, collect, analyze, archive and share audiovisual oral history records and works of digital storytelling within and beyond academia.

Our members are issued from academic and community backgrounds and their interests make up a tapestry that blends together artistic performance, research-creation, oral history and more. We welcome applications from any individual, organization, or group with an interest in and desire to explore oral history, digital storytelling and/or research-creation.

Affiliates have access to:

  • Borrowing various types of audio and visual recording equipment, including podcasting equipment.
  • Proposing and facilitating a workshop or lecture as part of COHDS’ yearly programming.
  • Conference room space (Sunroom) equipped with a projector, sound system and OWL.
  • Performance space/black box theatre (ALLab/Moonroom).
  • Booking space for their oral history-related events and workshops.
  • Editing and transcription programs and tools such as DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Suite, LogicPro, and more.
  • Sharing their research developments, events, etc. in our bi-weekly newsletter.
  • Opportunity to using COHDS spaces to exhibit research-creation projects and to conduct interviews.
  • Opportunities to meet other affiliates, find shared interests, and collaborate.

Affiliation guidelines and reciprocity

Affiliate members are a foundational part of COHDS, and in embracing the principle of reciprocity, affiliates are encouraged to participate in the COHDS programming events (either by attending or by facilitating workshops as part of the COHDS programming) and take part in our annual general assembly in early Fall. COHDS is also an archive and welcome collection donations.

We ask community members to send their yearly affiliate reports, as these allow us to share yearly developments at COHDS with the university’s administration, thus supporting our status as a research unit while renewing your status as an affiliate. Annual reports are short reports, a call out for which is sent out every spring along with instructions.

Please note that affiliation is an annual, as opposed to an open-ended, status. Affiliates who do not submit this report will not be re-affiliated (although they can re-affiliate in the future).

To find out more about guidelines and reciprocity, visit our Governance and Annual Reports page.
