Growing up in a violent society: Links between exposure to violence and youths’ understandings of revenge and forgiveness
This study investigates youths’ attempts to make sense of a world in which their moral principles clash with the pervasiveness of violence and injustice that they observe in their everyday lives. In a group of urban adolescents growing up in Bogota, Colombia, we are examining youths’ narrative accounts of interpersonal experiences of revenge and forgiveness. One of our principal aims is to identify sources of resilience among at-risk youth, in an effort to inform school-based intervention efforts.
