Museum of Jewish Montreal

The Museum of Jewish Montreal is an innovative place to connect with Montreal’s Jewish life and identity, share the community’s diverse heritage, and create new cultural experiences. Through innovative, multidisciplinary programming, our museum provides an accessible gateway for people to learn about and interact with Montreal’s Jewish culture, art, and heritage while also enabling the public to share their stories and experiences. Founded in 2010, our not-for-profit’s activities include walking tours of historic Jewish neighbourhoods and buildings, online exhibits, oral history collection, public programming, and contemporary art and heritage exhibitions. In 2016, we opened a storefront project space that houses a gallery, boutique, and food and event space where we host dozens of art, heritage, and cultural events each year.

Our museum’s oral history project comprises of a number of interrelated programs and activities, including: a publicly accessible crowd-sourced digital collection showcasing the diverse stories that make up Jewish Montreal; an annual oral history fellowship training and giving participants hands-on experience in oral history collection and community organizing techniques; themed community storytelling events; community outreach activities hinging around story-sharing; and integrating oral histories into walking tours, contemporary art exhibitions, and museum research projects.
