Mark Andrew Hamilton is a graduate of Concordia University, Montréal, where he worked under the advisement of Dr. Peter Gossage. His work holds a particular interest in queer archival histories and oral history collection. His MA thesis ‘Active Grieving: The Aesthetic Activism of ACT UP Montréal’ focuses on the graphic ephemera of the radical HIV/AIDS activist collective between 1990-1993, utilizing oral history and aesthetic analysis of protest-driven graphic design. Outside of academia, his music as Woodpigeon and as a member of Frontperson has received critical acclaim from The Guardian, New York Times, Die Zeit and others. His newest musical project Brittle Dreams is preparing release of their first LP with funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and Creative BC. His work as a writer has appeared in publications including The Vienna Review, Metropole and Icelandair Stopover, and he is presently the community director for QueerMTL at Tourisme Montréal and a curator of special exhibitions at the Archives gaies du Québec, including the shows ‘L’activisme esthétique d’ACT UP MONTRÉAL : une histoire en photos et en affiches’, ‘FAG QC* : 40 ans, 40 invité·es, 40 propositions tirées des Fonds des Archives Gaies du Québec’, and ‘GÉNÉRATION XEROX’, an exhibition on queer zine and self-publishing culture. The ACT UP Montréal exhibition will appear at MEM — Centre des mémoires montréalaises in an expanded form from July 2026 to February 2027, and an expanded full-length book version of FAG QC* compiled in collaboration with archivist Simone Beaudry-Pilotte and Dr. Alex Ketchum, has received CALQ funding and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
