Avalon is a visual communication designer whose work prioritises texture and working by hand before digital execution. Originating from Cape Town, South Africa, Avalon completed her undergraduate degree in Visual Communication Design at the University of Stellenbosch and her Master’s in Design at Concordia University. Her Master’s research explored the engendered feminine bodies’ experience of navigating Montreal’s public spaces daily- with a focus on the metro system. The outcome was a muti-medium stop-motion film documenting the voices of eight participants, primarily comprised of risograph printed stills as well as a chapbook and wheat pastes of poetic transcriptions. The interdisciplinary body of work explored how VCD might bring a sense of aurality into the transcription and communication of oral history through a combination of poetics, moving image and audio. Avalon now works as a freelance designer in Montreal.
