DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION: 

Founded in 2006, the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling (COHDS) is an award-winning interdisciplinary research unit within Concordia University. COHDS has about 250 affiliated faculty members, students, artists, educators, partner organizations, and community members. Our central mission is to support the gathering and preservation of the audiovisual oral history record, while encouraging solo, collaborative, and community-based research and creation that respond to living memory and oral testimony.

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

The Assistant to the Associate Director acts as a point of contact for our community members and aids in supporting the day-to-day operations of the centre; the Assistant reports directly to the Associate Director. We are looking for a highly organized individual who is able to work both in a self-directed and teamwork setting and communicate clearly with a diverse group of users/visitors. Under the supervision of, and in close collaboration with the Associate Director, the successful candidate will mainly be responsible for communicating with our community (email, newsletter, website and social media), helping with event organization (programming, posters, registration) and facilitating our affiliates’ use of our space, resources, and collection.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Answering general and technical inquiries from affiliates, researchers, students, faculty, or members of the general public by email and in-person
  • Providing assistance to the Associate Director in the work of organizing, hosting, and documenting training workshops, seminars, lectures, and other events
  • Assisting with our communications (bi-weekly newsletter, social media, website, mailing list) and event promotion
  • Keeping track of online event registration and attendance
  • Keeping mailing lists and affiliate lists up to date
  • Updating website content
  • Create event posters using our Canva templates; update templates as needed
  • Translating written content for the above platforms
  • Providing assistance to and liaising with different members of the COHDS team when needed
  • The Assistant to the Associate Director will be asked to attend regular staff meetings, report on their work, and communicate information to other staff members.

REQUIRED SKILLS: Bilingualism, computer skills (excel, word, other), customer service, data entry

STUDENT GAINS: COHDS is a multidisciplinary community of research and practice. This position allows the student to be in direct contact with a wide array of both community and academic research, in a bilingual environment. Through exposure to our workshops and seminars, the student can also gain training in oral history, participatory research, and research-creation. As a direct result of their work for COHDS, the student will regularly learn about community events and ongoing projects in the field of oral history. The Assistant to the Associate Director position may be extended into the summer and/or fall term.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

Candidates must be:

  • Canadian citizens and/or permanent residents who pay Quebec tuition fees, have applied for and are receiving Quebec student aid for the semester(s) in which they are employed
  • Approved for work-study
  • Have a full-time course load

CONDITIONS:

  • 10-12 hours/week, from May-August, 2025 (renewable) * with 3-week period where COHDS is closed
  • Flexible schedule within the COHDS opening hours
  • The salary is $17.75/hour
  • Starting date: May 1, 2025 (negotiable)
