Veronica Szinkulics is an independent researcher based in Montreal, with a background in ethnology and cultural anthropology. Her research began in the mining communities of Maramureș, in northern Romania, where she documented local history, material culture, women’s experiences, embroidery, and everyday life. Over the years, this work has resulted in books, articles, field research, and a museum exhibition dedicated to women and material culture in mining communities.
In 2026, she initiated The Lamp of Memory – Miners’ Global Heritage Project, through which she is exploring the memory and cultural heritage of former mining communities in Romania and, comparatively, in other mining regions. Her current interests include oral testimony, family and community memory, photographs, objects, and the ways in which people preserve and transmit the experience of places transformed by mine closure.
