Muhammad Arslan Hanif is a doctoral student at the Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University. His research explores folklore in Urdu and Punjabi, with a particular focus on storytelling traditions in South Asia. He examines the literary and poetic traditions of colonial and postcolonial Punjab through the Mirasi and Bhand communities—historically significant storytellers, oral historians, performers, and genealogists—to understand how oral traditions have shaped cultural memory, vernacular literary cultures, and social identities across the region.
