CJLO is hiring a Music Journalist in Residence

Work term: October 25, 2021 – August 31, 2022

Hours: 15 hours a week

Salary: $20.00 an hour

Application deadline: October 15, 2021

Location: Hybrid (remote / in-person). The selected candidate will need to be based in Montreal.

After an unprecedented year for the music industry, it is essential that we investigate new ways to support the city’s musicians, bands, venues, promoters, and industry professionals. As a campus-community radio station, we understand how integral spaces like ours can be for emerging artists looking to receive airplay for the first time. Similarly, as a media entity, we recognize the value we bring to critical coverage in our community. Mapping Montreal Music will be a new way to welcome music lovers back to live music – its past, present and future – as well as strengthen our media ecosystem as it recovers from serious setbacks throughout the pandemic.

CJLO 1690AM and the Centre for Oral History is proud to announce a new Music Journalism Residency program at the station as part of a new project we call Mapping Montreal Music. This project will seek to shed light on the vibrant music communities in Montreal through innovative technologies and immersive audio storytelling techniques. The Music Journalist in residence will create an audio documentary series on Montreal’s music community through the lens of its many boroughs and neighbourhoods. Excerpts from this documentary will be featured in a new geo-coding web application that will guide users through Montreal’s music scene as they walk through the city. The candidate will work closely with our Station Manager, our Program Director, our Music Director, and our Web Developer.

CJLO 1690AM was formed in 1998 as a merger between CRSG and CFLI, two former stations based at Concordia University’s two campuses. CJLO is 100 per cent non-profit and programmed almost entirely by volunteers, the station is located in the heart of the Loyola campus in the NDG borough in Montreal.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Research and production: The selected candidate will need to produce an eight-part audio documentary series for CJLO’s airwaves and streaming platforms. Content from this audio documentary series will be used in our geo-coding web application. We expect our candidate to have an intimate knowledge of the Montreal music scene, its past and present, while maintaining a finger on the pulse of emerging trends.

Creation: Create original audio works for broadcast and online streaming platforms. Details related to scope, structure, and tone will be up to the discretion of the selected candidate, with input from the CJLO team. We ask that the Music Journalist in Residence create a documentary series totalling eight episodes, each 30 minutes in length. Each episode should focus on the various neighborhoods and boroughs in Montreal: the Mile End, Little Italy, Milton Park, Downtown/Ville-Marie, St-Henri/Little Burgundy, Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Montreal-Nord, and Notre-Dame-de-Grace.

Engagement: The Music Journalist in Residence will be working with a production assistant on the creation of the series and to provide mentorship. The selected candidate will be working with CJLO and the Centre for Oral History to develop two workshops, one in the fall and the other in the summer. Workshop topics are at the discretion of the candidate, but they must touch on the intersection of music journalism and audio storytelling. Related, both the Music Journalist and Production Assistant will be working with volunteers and programmers at the station who wish to contribute to the project, develop their own journalistic skills, and improve their own shows.

Education: We are pleased to be working with the Centre for Oral History (COHDS) at Concordia University on this exciting project. COHDS is willing to offer educational resources, access to resources, and mentorship opportunities to our selected candidate, as well as equipment and studio / production space.
