I am a first-year PhD student in the Department of Religions and Cultures at Concordia, specializing in Canadian Jewish studies. My research concerns the Hungarian Jewish community of Montreal and its subgroups, currently focusing on the Hungarian Martyrs Synagogue and Sisterhood. My seminar research during my Religion / Judaic Studies MA addressed Hungarian Jewish food and death rituals, mainly through an array of Holocaust memoirs. My previous MA, in Concordia’s Department of History, used a similar primary source base to delve into a broad ambit of interethnic and class relations in the World War II-era Hungarian-annexed borderlands of Subcarpathian Ruthenia, Southern Maramureş, and Northern Transylvania, culminating in the topic of bystanders during the Holocaust in these northeastern regions of the irredentist Hungarian state.
