Anne Bourne

ANNE BOURNE sound artist/composer, cellist/vocalist improviser, listening mentor.
Seasoned in international recording and intermedia performance Anne met Pauline Oliveros telematically through composer James Tenney, improvising over distance with Pauline at the Kitchen, NY, and an ensemble in Paris, 1994. Anne found her way to the Sangre de Cristo mountains, to retreat with Pauline in New Mexico. In 1998 Anne was one of les six to first receive a Certificate from Oliveros, and premiered Oliveros’ Primordial/Lift with Pauline, David Grubbs( Gastre de Sol) and Tony Conrad at Hallwalls NY, 1998. Anne began leading collective creative sound events, with the text scores of Oliveros, in collective creative expression, and Listening walks to deepen relation to all life in a practice of environmental attunement. Anne has imparted Pauline’s scores and listening practice in many university’s and festival as a visitor, and as faculty in Collective Composition Lab, Banff Centre for Art and Creativity, 2017-20, and presently as advisor and faculty to the Center for Deep Listening, Rensselaer, NY.
As Chalmers Fellow, (OAC) Anne researched shoreline soundfields, deep ocean, and adjacent overtone vocal practices, as a point of departure for her ecoacoustic compositions in devotion to water with TBA21 Ocean Uni; to create soundfields for ecoart installations; and audiovisual pieces, with those who stand for the wild. i.e. Learning Endings Patty Chang US, Aleksija Neimanis, CA/SE, Astrida Neimanis CA; and Radio Amnion UK. among others. Artist residency Sointula, Malcolm Island CA 2024 research of subaqueous wave patterns, whale infrasonics in the Pacific NW.
Recent: Kara Lis Coverdale, ‘from where you came,’ Smalltown Supersound, 2025. ‘Fathoming lithium sediment of pearl’ will be released on vinyl by Radio Amnion in UK 2026, Venice Biennale Arte 2026 features sound art inspired by the deep listening of Pauline Oliveros.
