Alley Atlas

by Anja Novkovic

“Alley Atlas” is a research-creation project that digitally maps the hidden stories of the Bishop/Mackay alleyway. Through observations, historical research, and oral-history interviews, Anja Novkovic developed six key themes for cartographic and artistic exploration. Those themes were turned into illustrated maps that highlight place-based personal stories of friendship, death, belonging, and crime experienced in alleyways, spaces that often escape representation in public and popular history. The stories mapped in this atlas visualize and approach the space of alleyways around themes of gender, criminality, death, mental illness, community, and labour. “Alley Atlas” won the 2020 COHDS Award of Honour in Oral History.
