Born in Armenia, Sona Pogossian is a dance artist and researcher whose work lies at the intersection of performance, anthropology, and intercultural dialogue. She is currently a PhD candidate in Étude et pratique des arts at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and a recipient of the RÉQEF Excellence Award (Réseau québécois en études féministes, 2022).
She began her journey with classical and contemporary dance training in Europe, studying at the Lyon Conservatory and performing with the Jeune Ballet de Genève. In 2010, a growing fascination with character dance led her to Russia to pursue advanced studies at the Moscow State University of Art and Culture, where her artistic and academic work focused on ethnic representations through dance and performance.
Driven by an interest in intercultural movement practices, Sona’s artistic inquiry focuses heavily on diverse traditions. This curiosity has taken her to work in over 10 countries—including Cuba, Brazil, Ireland, Argentina, Austria, and Bulgaria—allowing her to study local dance practices firsthand. Deeply committed to the social impact of art, Sona frequently collaborates on interdisciplinary and socio-cultural projects. She has worked closely with community-driven organizations globally, including the NGO Maliba, U-man Radio, the Casa Astral Institute, the NGO Women’s Resource Center, and UWC Dilijan.
