Description of Organization:

Founded in 2006, the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling (COHDS) is an award-winning interdisciplinary research unit within Concordia University. COHDS has about 250 affiliated faculty members, students, artists, educators, partner organizations, and community members. Our central mission is to support the gathering and preservation of the audiovisual oral history record, while encouraging solo, collaborative, and community-based research and creation that respond to living memory and oral testimony.

Job Description:

The Exhibition Assistant is responsible for developing the infrastructure of the COHDS exhibition space, of curating an exhibit and assisting with day-to-day tasks (both managerial and technical) of the Acts of Listening Lab (ALLab), a performance and exhibition space

We seek a candidate with initiative, who is well organized and able to work both in a collaborative and autonomous environment.

Core Responsibilities Include: 

Under the guidance and supervision of the Associate Director, the Exhibition Assistant at the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling (COHDS) will be responsible for:

  • Designing the exhibition space-Researching and implementing infrastructure needs that match the vision-Develop a handbook for organizing and curating exhibitions
  • Assisting in the management and technical support of the Acts of Listening Lab, which is both a performance and an exhibit space
  • Curating an inaugural exhibition
  • Managing the exhibition space and coordinating exhibition logistics including reaching out to artists from the COHDS community, following up after exhibitions, and managing documentation
  • Assisting with the development of the COHDS visual archive
  • Liaising with different members of the COHDS team and partners when needed-In collaboration with the COHDS team, promote the inaugural exhibition

The Exhibition Assistant will be asked to attend regular staff meetings, report on their work, and communicate information to other staff members.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must be Concordia University students eligible for work-study (Québec category)
  • Bilingualism (French and English)
  • Exhibition Management experience, experience working in a gallery context and with community initiatives
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to work alone and in a group setting
  • Effective communication and writing skills
  • Basic computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite, technical expertise related to image management an asset
  • Ability to work within a budget

Conditions:

  • 13-15 hours/week
  • Contract dates: September 3 to December 15 (negotiable), possibility of renewing for the winter term
  • The salary is $16.75/hour
