SUMMARY:Labours of Love: Oral Histories of Working and Activist Subcultures
DESCRIPTION:Round-table with Allegra Chiarella\, Evan Wolfe and Freyja Chapman \nThis panel will showcase student oral history research on three distinctive communities and subcultures: members of a bike courier cooperative in Montréal (Allegra)\, treeplanters in northern B.C (Evan) and the Mining Injustice Solidarity Network (MISN) in Toronto (Freyja). The three panelists will bring their work into conversation on shared themes of the insider/outsider dynamics\, the role of storytelling in constructing worldviews and identities\, and oral transmission of knowledge common across these groups. Bring questions and embrace your curiosity: after presentations\, the floor will be opened to the audience for discussion. \n  \nEvan Wolfe is a student of oral history as an MA student in Concordia’s Individualized Program\, where he will facilitate the sharing and collection of stories of and around sexualized substance use\, set against the legal and policy landscape that shapes this part of people’s lives. For the COHDS Storytelling Festival\, he returns to his undergraduate thesis from Minerva University to share stories from the tree-planting subcultures of Canada’s silviculture (reforestation) industry. \n  \nFreyja Chapman is a masters’ student at Carleton University’s Institute of Political Economy. Their current research is focused on energy infrastructure and the futures that it projects\, but they also always want to learn more about birds.  \n  \nAllegra Chiarella is an undergraduate history student at Concordia\, currently working on their thesis\, which is an oral history of the Montreal bike messenger cooperative\, Chasseurs Courrier. Outside of academia\, they are a writer and freelance journalist with a forthcoming piece about the relationship between bike messenger co-ops and the broader platform gig economy in Maisonneuve magazine this October 2026. \n  \n  \n  \n\n\nREGISTRATION \nRegister now with this link \nPlease note that all our events are free and open to all\, but registration is mandatory. For any questions\, please contact cohds.chorn@concordia.ca \nLOCATION \nIn-person in LB-1019 (Sunroom)\, Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling (COHDS)\, Concordia University\, 1400 de Maisonneuve Blvd. West\, J.W. McConnell Building (Library Building). \nCOHDS/ALLAB is located on unceded Kanien’kehá:ka territory\, in Tiohtiá:ke/Montreal.
