SUMMARY:Introduction to Oral History

Photo by Lauren Laframboise \n  \nwith Lauren Laframboise \nEnglish \nThis workshop will provide you with some of the fundamentals in the interdisciplinary field of oral history. Participants will learn about an oral history approach to interviewing\, ethics in research\, and the many ways that oral histories are shared with the public. This workshop is strongly recommended to all new affiliates\, as it is intended to present the methodology and ethics followed by our Centre. \nLauren Laframboise is a PhD student at the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling in the Department of History at Concordia University. Her research explores the impacts of deindustrialization in the apparel industry in Montréal and New York City. In 2021\, Lauren completed her MA in History at Concordia\, and from 2020-2022 she was the Associate Director of Deindustrialization and the Politics of Our Time. She has worked on a variety of public history projects\, including museum exhibitions\, online oral history platforms\, documentary film and radio\, and walking tours. \nREGISTRATION \nPlease note that all of our events are free and open to all\, but you need to register! SUMMARY:Table ronde: Retour sur les principes déontologiques du CHORN
DESCRIPTION:Avec Anna Sheftel\, Aude Maltais-Landry\, Catherine Richardson\, Indira Chowdhury\, Monica Toca et Steven High \nModéré par Eliot Perrin \nAu cours de la dernière année\, nous avons reçu une série de demandes relatives à la déontologie et au consentement. Il nous paraît donc opportun de revisiter les principes et pratiques déontologiques du centre\, et ce\, afin de continuer à répondre aux besoins de nos membres\, de nos partenaires communautaires et de la société en général. \nDans cette optique\, nous aimerions mobiliser la communauté du centre en vue d’une réflexion sur les sujets entourant l’évolution des principes et des pratiques déontologiques. Comme point de départ\, nous avons cerné quelques questions qui pourraient contribuer à stimuler la conversation. \nLe formulaire de consentement qui doit être signé vise à protéger les participantes et participants\, mais constitue parfois une barrière pour les personnes marginalisées qui ne possèdent peut-être pas la culture universitaire ou le niveau de littératie nécessaire pour bien le comprendre. Le fait d’insister sur la nécessité d’un formulaire de consentement écrit\, et souvent complexe\, mine-t-il nos efforts en matière d’« autorité partagée »? Quelles mesures pourrions-nous adopter pour reconnaître le fait que la culture universitaire\, la littératie (et la langue parlée) varient d’une communauté à l’autre? Comment pouvons-nous progresser au regard de cet enjeu tout en maintenant nos principes déontologiques? Quelles protections pouvons-nous mettre en place pour que les volontés des personnes participantes soient respectées et prises en compte au fil du temps? \nQue signifie l’expression « autorité partagée » dans le contexte des mouvements sociaux émancipateurs et des luttes anticoloniales? Que signifie décoloniser nos protocoles déontologiques et nos archives? Qu’attendent les communautés autochtones et d’autres groupes culturels de ces archives en ce qui concerne la propriété\, le contrôle\, la disponibilité et le partage de leurs récits? \nPour répondre à ces questions\, nous aimerions organiser une table ronde ou un atelier en 2022-2023 dans le but de mettre à jour et de modifier l’énoncé de principes du centre en matière de déontologie. SUMMARY:Emotions in Oral History
DESCRIPTION:with Nadia Hausfather\, Ioana Radu\, Elise Olmedo and Piyusha Chatterjee \nEnglish (Q&A in En/Fr) \nOral history interviews are dialogic conversations between two (and sometimes more) people. Just as looking back and reflecting on one’s past can be an emotional experience\, interactions between people also have an affective dimension. How do we attend to our emotions and that of others in oral history research— during interviews and in analysis? This workshop will encourage thinking through emotions as an important part of doing oral history research. \nNadia Hausfather’s work examines the emotional tenor of student activism around the 2012 students’ strike; Ioana Radu’s oral history project with Chisasibi Eeyou attends to emotional wellbeing of communities as an important part of healing and decolonisation; Elise Olmedo has been working on alternative ways of mapping that allow emotions\, sensations and affective dimensions of stories to be mapped; and Piyusha Chatterjee’s interviews with buskers brings up emotions and embodied feelings related to urban space that convey marginalisation and displacement in a post-industrial city. \nREGISTRATION \nPlease note that all of our events are free and open to all\, but you need to register!
