How does art channel and reshape the way we listen to lived experience?<\/p>\n
Join\u00a0Amy Starecheski, Director of Columbia University\u2019s Oral History Master of Arts, and\u00a0Luis C. Sotelo, Director of Concordia University\u2019s\u00a0Acts of Listening Lab (ALLab), for a conversation with three artist\u2013scholar teams funded by ALLab to explore bold new pathways for mediating testimony through creative practice. This symposium brings together innovative practitioners working at the intersection of oral history, performance, sound, and socially engaged art. Together, we\u2019ll delve into the\u00a0practical and theoretical challenges\u00a0of transforming real-life stories into artistic forms<\/p>\n

This project is carried out in collaboration with Kim Sawchuk, Kara Paul, and Teatro Ciego.<\/p>\n Vanessa Ter\u00e1n<\/a><\/u><\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/b>Mar\u00eda Fernanda del Real\u00a0<\/a><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n Suc\u00faa Haven<\/i><\/p>\n Migrant Stories: Embodied Listening Lab<\/p>\n Inspired by Suc\u00faa Haven, a collection of migration stories created with Ecuadorian in Connecticut (United States), a group of Latin diaspora participants in Montreal (Canada), as well as Ecuadorians and other Latin American immigrants in Quito (Ecuador), will reflect on their own migratory experiences and create performances of embodied testimonies that places Suc\u00faa Haven stories in dialogue with their own.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Peng Hsu<\/a><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n Cucumbers, The Melancholy of a Turtle and a Girl’s Otaku’s Romance<\/i><\/p>\n A novel\/play creative project that explores BBR. BBR, short for\u00a0Broke Broke Recitation<\/i>, is my translation of the Mandarin term \u788e\u788e\u5538 (siu siu nian<\/i>), a phrase commonly used in Taiwan and China to describe how women chatter incessantly about daily and seemingly banal trivialities. Theorized here as a technique of queer narration, BBR functions as a dramaturgical writing style through which the project examines housing justice, an endangered turtle, and the inarticulable experiences of constipation and yearning of romance.<\/p>\n Moderator<\/b><\/p>\n Luis C.
