Knowing and Being Known: An Exploration of Self and Cultural Identity Through Arts Based Research

Elizabeth Healey is studying five generations of women in her family through genealogical research and artistic practice to analyze how we can better understand ourselves through learning about our ancestors and how the artistic process enhances that understanding. Oral history has been a critical component since most of the formal records are limited to census lists and birth and death records. Through interviewing still living members and accessing oral records from the past, she has been able to come to know and understand these women on a deeper level.
