A Theory and Practice Workshop on ''Proactive Archiving''

Lundi, janvier 20, 2020 - 18:00 to 20:00

In English

With / Avec Glenn Patterson

In this workshop, COHDS affiliate Glenn Patterson will explore the practice of proactive sound archiving—considering their opportunities and challenges—by drawing from existing scholarship and his experiences working with musicians and communities in Quebec since 2009 to secure a future for their audiovisual heritage. Proactive archives seek to shift the received idea of an archives as passive repository of “raw” research materials towards a space of encounter between an enlarged community of cultural stakeholders that includes community members, practitioners, researchers, collectors, educators, and archivists. At their core, proactive archival projects all seek to explore whether there can and should be a more active life for the materials making up archival collections.

Glenn Patterson is a multi-instrumentalist and PhD candidate in ethnomusicology at Memorial University (St. John’s, Newfoundland). For the past decade he has worked with the English-speaking minority of the Gaspé Coast to archive and make use of the musical heritage that community members shared through their personal home recordings made between the late 1950s and the early 2000s. This work resulted in two community-oriented blogs where this music is shared and discussed, and an ethnographic CD co-produced with fiddler and musicologist Laura Risk and the Douglas Community Centre in the eastern Gaspésie. He is currently working with the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network (QAHN) on a Canadian Heritage supported public ethnomusicology called A Different Tune: Musical Heritage in English-Speaking Quebec. With the help of COHDS and a host of community partner organizations, he is applying and adapting his proactive archival practices to work with English-speaking communities across the province to document, share, and strengthen their musical heritage.
