Collaborative Video Making with Young Women in Ethiopia: Exchanging Ideas on Collaborative Arts-Based Community Work

In this workshop, Dr Leila Qashu will begin by discussing the collaborative video work she has been doing with young women in Ethiopia, many of whom have faced challenges in their lives. She will show video clips and discuss the process, including the practical aspects, success and challenges, and the girls' feedback. This also includes feedback on how collaborative arts work has improved their everyday lives and wellbeing. Dr Qashu will also offer her own reflections on the process. The second part of the workshop will be an open roundtable where we will share experiences and discuss successes and challenges with collaborative work.

Leila Qashu has recently received her PhD in ethnomusicology from Memorial University of Newfoundland. She is an incoming Banting postdoctoral fellow who will be based at COHDS for the next two years. Her dissertation, entitled “Towards an Understanding of Justice, Belief and Women's Rights: Ateetee, an Arsi Oromo women's musical dispute resolution process in Ethiopia," examines how Arsi Oromo (Ethiopian) women use expressive arts not only to protect, promote, and assert their rights and to achieve justice in a rapidly changing society.
