COHDS Annual General Assembly

Friday, September 23, 2016 - 11:00 to 14:00
Leila Qashu

COHDS Annual General Assembly (12h15-14h) with a keynote by Dr. Leila Qashu (11h-12h)

Leila Qashu has recently received her PhD in ethnomusicology from Memorial University of Newfoundland and is an incoming Banting postdoctoral fellow at COHDS. Her dissertation, entitled “Towards an Understanding of Justice, Belief and Women's Rights: Ateetee, an Arsi Oromo women's musical dispute resolution process in Ethiopia," provides the basis for this talk examining how Arsi Oromo (Ethiopian) women use expressive arts not only to protect, promote, and assert their rights, but, as in the case of Ateetee, also to achieve justice in a rapidly changing society. Building from this, she will also discuss how young Arsi women are using expressive arts in response to current social, economic, and political challenges they are facing.

Leila Qashu’s keynote will be followed by our Annual General Meeting. Lunch will be provided.
