Lilia Topouzova Awarded a SSHRC Postdoc at COHDS

Dr. Lilia Topouzova, an award winning filmmaker and historian, has been awarded a 2-year SSHRC post-doctoral fellowship to examine the recorded life stories and personal archives of Bulgarian gulag survivors. "The Bulgarian Gulag: Survivors Remember" project builds on her doctoral research on the history of state repression and transitional justice in that country. Lilia will now explore the personal legacy of imposed silence, resulting in a scholarly monograph and an online "living archives." Her 2007 documentary film, "The Mosquito Problem and Other Stories," which tells the story of remembering and forgetting in a Bulgarian town - the site of a Communist-era labour camp, earned more than 25 prizes, including the Human Rights Award at the Sarajevo Film Festival and it was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. She received her PhD from the University of Toronto and previously was a postdoctoral fellow at Brown University. Lilia joins existing SSHRC post-doctoral fellow Dr. Karoline Truchon and will likewise be working with Steven High.
