Lachlan MacKinnon Receives the 2017 Award for Excellence in Oral History

The jury (Debbie Folaran, Leila Qashu and Ronald Rudin) for the COHDS Award for Excellence in Oral History has selected LachlanMacKinnon as its 2017 recipient for his doctoral dissertation (completed in the History Department in 2016) "Deindustrialization on the Periphery: An Oral History of Sydney Steel, 1945-2001."

In his dissertation, Dr MacKinnon goes out of his way to connect the process of deindustrialization in Cape Breton to the lives of the people who experienced it. While his dissertation is built upon a significant amount of archival research, it is truly distinguished by its reliance on the testimony, mostly of workers at Sydney Steel, putting to good use both interviews conducted by others in the 1990s and ones that he conducted himself as part of his dissertation research. The result is a model of oral history practice, combining a variety of sources to make a story come to life.

Congratulations Dr MacKinnon!
