Job posting: Lab and Events Assistant (Work-Study)

 

The Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling is currently looking to hire a bilingual Lab and Events Assistant for the Fall 2017 semester.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of and in close collaboration with the Associate Director, the Lab and Events Assistant at the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling will be responsible for:

LAB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Opening the COHDS computer lab;
- Providing assistance to COHDS affiliates and other visitors, in person, on the phone, and by email;
- Managing equipment loans and room bookings;
- Providing technical assistance to staff and affiliates;
- Conducting computer and equipment maintenance;
- Assisting the COHDS archivist when needed;
- Performing other tasks involved with the daily operation of the lab.

EVENTS-RELATED RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assisting the Associate Director in organising, hosting, and documenting training workshops, seminars, lectures, and other events;
- Preparing the rooms, equipment, and material for events;
- Creating event pages on the COHDS website (Drupal) and Facebook page;
- Managing the COHDS calendar;
- Keeping track of event registration and attendance.

The Lab and Events Assistant will also participate in staff meetings, report regularly on their work, and communicate information to other staff members.

REQUIRED SKILLS
- Bilingualism (French and English), spoken and written;
- Aptitude for customer service;
- Attention to detail is essential;
- Computer skills: word processing, data entry (Excel), Web editing (Drupal), social media, Photoshop, Google apps, equipment maintenance;
- Excellent writing skills in French and in English are an asset;
- Media/film production skills are an asset;
- Server maintenance skills are an asset;
- Interest in or knowledge of web programming is an asset.

STUDENT GAINS
The Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling is a very multidisciplinary community of research and practice. This position allows the student to be in direct contact with a wide array of both community and academic researchers, in a bilingual environment. Through our workshops and seminars, the student can also gain training in oral history, participatory research, and research-creation. In the fall, the student will have the opportunity to help organise the COHDS Film Festival. The Lab and Events Assistant position will be extended into the winter term if funding is available.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Duration: 15 weeks
Schedule: 10-12 hours a week
Type of hiring agreement: Contract
Start date: September 5th + a few hours of training in the week of August 28th
